In the Trainer’s Championship, Harriet finished 9th of Scottish based trainers and 3rd of Borders trainers. It was a frustrating season, especially the Spring, with lots of meetings lost to frost, snow and water logging, followed by massive entries at subsequent meetings that led to balloting out. The problem was made worse by racecourse stable shortages caused by the new Jockey Club rule that each stable at a racecourse can only be used by one horse on a raceday. Courses like Hexham only have 79 stables but should be able to handle around 100 runners! We also had a frustrating number of 2nd places.

On the plus side, Russian Sky had yet another season of amazingly consistent performances for our HG Racing syndicate and has taken well to Chasing. Indy Mood  returned to the track and after a pipe opener at Kelso, finished 2nd in a Grade 2 handicap hurdle at Ayr on Scottish National day. Lofty Leader won his second race for us, although true to form, he didn’t make it easy for his jockey by idling on the run in.

We would like to welcome the new owners who had their first runners with us: Alistair & Rachel Bell, David & Nicky Leggate, Ian Rodden and The Brave Lads Syndicate, plus the return of Fred & Janet Chapman.

We have always strongly believed in keeping our owners informed about race plans and so, in addition to e-mails, we have also started up a new text information service for our syndicate owners, which has proved very popular. We use this to send information about race entries and declarations directly to syndicate member’s mobiles.

Once again, we would like to thank all our owners for giving us the chance to train their horses. We would also like to thank the jockeys who regularly rode for us: Rose Davidson (1 win), Andy Glassonbury (1 win), Tom Messenger, Tom Greenway, Dougie Costello, Mark Bradburne and Owyn Nelmes. In addition to these, the behind the scenes workers also deserve a big mention:

The Staff                Fiona Gillie, Marjorie Renwick, Lisa McLean, Jilly Hedley,

Steve Turnbull and the ‘Saturday’ Staff

Farrier                    Mick Cross

Vets                       Reed, Brown & Cameron

Jockey’s Agent        Russell James (for all his help and advice)

THE HORSES

Acca Larentia

Needs top of the ground and ran a fair race at Musselburgh before being given a winter break. She has strengthened up for it and we are looking forward to a Summer campaign, but it has been difficult to get her a run as she was balloted out 4 consecutive times.

Alani

A winner on the flat for Jedd O'Keefe over 2m last summer and bought by The Brave Lads Racing Syndicate to go hurdling. Suffered a setback but will return in the Autumn.

Alice’s Old Rose

A frustrating season coming back from injury with the ground going against her at the turn of the year and then she has been another to suffer from being balloted out in the Spring.

Brundeanlaws

She was placed 3rd in a novice hurdle at Newcastle, but chasing was always going to be her game and she made a very pleasing debut over fences at Kelso, running on well for 6th.

Harry Hooly

Seems to have been showing his age a bit this season, but managed a 3rd over fences at Sedgefield, but was another who suffered from abandoned meetings at his favourite tracks, especially Hexham. He will Point-To-Point next season as a schoolmaster for Steve Turnbull, one of our work riders, to start him off race riding.

Hooky’s Quest

Out of our winning Point-to-Pointer Hooky’s Treat, and leased to The Brave Lads Syndicate. She ran a nice debut in her bumper before disappointing on her hurdles debut. She is being given a break now and should come back stronger in the Autumn.

Indy Mood

A very pleasing return to the track after injury. Given a pipe opener at Kelso before finishing 2nd in a Grade 2 hurdle at Ayr on Scottish National day.

Kellys Double Gold

A cheap purchase from Doncaster. Had one disappointing run on the Flat and has been sold as a riding horse for some girls.

Lofty Leader

Won his second race for us at Carlisle, despite wandering around when hitting the front. Was injured subsequently, but should return to the track in the Autumn.

Maylee

Showed potential in her Bumpers, but will need more time to strengthen up.

Parisian Rose

Showed some potential, but it was decided that her future lay as a riding horse and was sold on.

Pink Tourmaline

Showed some potential as a sprinter, but she kept getting balloted out of races at the end of the season, so we could not run her over her preferred distance.

Port D’Argent

From a very good family, but came with problems which in the end proved too much to overcome and she has been retired to stud.

Redeswire Ruby

Did not have the right attitude to make it as a racehorse, far too laid back, and so has been sold to event.

Rosalyons

Like Harry Hooly, showing his age a bit and was difficult to keep sound and retirement may be calling soon. He missed the Kelso Autumn meetings, but ran a good enough race in the Spring.

Ruby Joy

She sparkled on her Bumper debut, finishing 2nd, but the ground was subsequently against her. She was really unlucky at Perth when her saddle slipped.

Russian Sky

Another amazingly consistent season, winning at Wetherby on Boxing Day and apart from a disappointment at Uttoxeter, was always in the first four. Took to chasing really well and was 2nd on his second run over fences.

Thepubhorse

Our patience and that of his owners was rewarded with a series of placed efforts and he looked destined to win when leading at Sedgefield before he broke a leg. Thanks to his jockey (Dougie Costello) thinking quickly in pulling him up before jumping the next hurdle, he was saved and is now in our field.

Wellstream Blue

Shows plenty of attitude at home, but doesn’t like the hustle and bustle of racing. He has been retired.

FOR SALE/LEASE

Russian Sky
Endoli (USA) out of Anzarna (Zambrano) - Grey gelding 1999
We will be syndicating out ‘Boris’ again next season through our HG Racing syndicate, and he looks to be an exciting Novice Chaser.

Brundeanlaws
Endoli (USA) out of The Respondant (Respect) - Bay mare 2001
Big mare who looks every inch a Chaser. She had a couple of runs in Bumpers, was 3rd on hurdles debut and showed potential on her Chase debut. Shares available for lease.

Hooky’s Quest
Environment Friend out of Hooky’s Treat (Dutch Treat) - Brown mare 2002
Given a couple of runs for experience, and showed some promise on her Bumper debut. Will run again in the Autumn.

Unnamed
Overbury (IRE) out of Mazzelmo - Bay filly 2002
Dam won 4 races on the Flat and 2 over hurdles. Should be ready to run end of June.

Also ….

We are starting up two three year olds this Summer with a view to running them in junior Bumpers in the Autumn

FUTURE PLANS

We have had lots of young horses this season who have needed time to develop and mature. They should improve over the Summer and we are excited about the prospects for next Winter.

We are also looking forward to Alani, Lofty Leader and Love From Russia returning to training to give us an exciting stable of horses for the new season.

We are also hoping to attract new owners either with their own horses or by taking an interest in one of the horses mentioned above.
